I once have been asked this... "What did Montessori mean by 'The Secret of Chidlhood' "? My initial response was ...'The secret of childhood, can be different for each. But I personally think what she means is that a child is not a miniature adult, nor are they incapable of things and need to be treated in the traditional sense as a 'helpless child'. Yes, they do have certain limitations in the things that they do, but they are also capable of amazing things, and possess endless possibilities of human potential. If you watch a child who has the freedom to 'work' (Montesori always referred to 'child's play' or anything they do as work since it helps them grow) the concentration and focus they have towards putting all their efforts in accomplishing a task is amazing.
But I would like to see what others may think of it. Feel free to post your ideas and opinions on the "Secret of Childhood".
